जिस आवाज़ को आप अपनी हर नब्ज़ में महसूस करते हों

जिस आवाज़ में छिपा दर्द अपने स्वभाव से परे जा, आपके दिल को सुकून पहुँचाता हो

जिस आवाज़ को सुने बिना आपकी रातें सुबह का सूरज लांघने में हिचकती हों  

जिस आवाज़ को सुनकर ऐसा लगे जैसे “बस पहुँच ही गए घर” किसी अपने के पास..

मेरे लिए यह आवाज़ जगजीत जी हैं।

एक अरसे बाद जब किताब हाथ में आयी तो आंखे किताब के कवर पेज से उलझ गयीं.. ज़गजीत जी की इतनी तस्वीरें इंटरनेट पर बिखरी रहती हैं फिर भी हर नयी तस्वीर को देखकर लगता है संगीत का अगर चेहरा होता तो तो हू-ब-हू ज़गजीत ज़ी से मिलता.. इतना ही सादा इतना ही संपूर्ण। लबों पर हल्की सी हंसी, चेहरे पर थोडी सी शरारत और आँखे शून्य, आँखें जहाँ हर कोई पनाह पाना चाहता हो, कुछ लम्हें ठहर कर उस आवाज़ को महसूस करना चाहता हो... देखना चाहता हो कि गज़ल गुनगुनाते वक़्त जगजीत जी को दुनिया वैसी ही दिखती होगी जैसी है.. या फिर वो अपने आवाज़ के आयामों में एक नया जहाँ तलाश लेते होंगे जहाँ दर्द भी मीठा लगता हो, किसी बिछड़े हुए रिश्ते की तरह।

यह जीवनी, जगजीत जी की ज़िंदगी के तह-दर-तह सफ़हे खोलती जाती है, जहाँ उस एक आवाज़ से ही नहीं, उस शख्सियत से भी रू-ब-रू होने का मौका मिलता है जिसे संगीत से अलग जानना शायद इतना आसां नहीं होता। जगजीत जी की ज़िंदगी के कुछ पहलुओं को इतना करीब से जानना जहाँ आपको रोमांचित करता है वही दिल में एक कसक रह जाती है की काश थोड़ा और जान पाते.. उनका बचपन, संगीत को लेकर उनका लगाव, जब गज़लें एक श्रोतागण तक ही सीमित थी तब एक परिपाटी से परे जाकर संगीत के क्षेत्र मे अपना ही नहीं गज़लों का भी अलग मुकाम बनाना, अपने लिए गए फैसलों पर, अपने सपने पर विश्वास करना, उस सपने को पूरा करने के लिए संगीत के एक नए युग की शूरूवात करना, माईक के पीछे का संघर्षरत जीवन। जगजीत जी के पारिवारिक जीवन के बारे में जानने का मौका मिलता है जहाँ चित्रा जी से भेंट, कुछ नए रिश्तों से जुड़ाव आदि से संबधित कुछ किस्से है और सफलता के दौर से गुज़रते हुए, अपने सपने के लिए नया आकाश बनाकर... उसपर अपनी आवाज़ से सतरंगी इन्द्रधनुष फेरते जगजीत।

किताब को जगजीत जी की जीवन कथा के अनुसार कई छोटे छोटे पार्टस में बाँटा गया है और बड़ी ही खूबसूरती से उन भागों के शीर्षक स्थापित किए गए। उनके जीवन का हर एक किस्सा उन्हीं की गायी एक गज़ल के साथ शूरू किया गया है, जो कि वाकई काबिल-ए-तारीफ़ है।

जगजीत जी के जीवन से उठाए गए अंशों का चित्रण इतने सलीके से किया गया है कि यह जीवनी.. आँखों के समक्ष चलती डॉक्यूमेंट्री जैसा महसूस करवाती है, जहाँ जगजीत जी थे, चित्रा जी थीं, और उनके अस्तित्व को पूरा करता उनका परिवार, उनका संगीत।

किताब के अंतिम कुछ पृष्ठ चित्रा जी की वर्तमान ज़िंदगी पर लिखे गये है.. उनके अंतर्मन में ऐसी ना जाने कितनी किताबें होगी कितने ही किस्से होंगे...कितना मुश्किल होता होगा उस आवाज़ को सुनना जो आपसे अलग नहीं थी और फिर एक दिन अचानक उस आवाज़ का बस याद बन जाना। आवाज़ जो पूरी दुनिया की रूह को सूकून पहुंचाती है वो शायद चित्रा जी के दिल में एक दर्द एक टीस पैदा करती होगी।

यह गज़लनामा उस शक्स की ज़िदंगी का क़तरा भर है.. जगजीत जी की हर एक गज़ल में, अल्फाज़ों के बीच उठती गिरती सांसे, ठहराव पाते लफ्ज़ और उस ठहराव पर अपने सुनने वालों की धड़कने बांध लेने वाले जगजीत जी को कुछ सफहों में समेट पाना, चंद लम्हों में बयां कर पाना उतना ही मुश्किल है जितना इश्क का दर्द की लौ से दूरी बनाए रखना।

किताब से कुछ अंश: 

“गुलज़ार ने खुलेआम उनकी तारीफ करते हुए कहा था “मिर्ज़ा गालिब, जगजीत से परे के जगजीत हैं।“

बात निकलेगी तो फिर दूर तलक जाएगी

जगजीत जी ने इन आलोचनाओ को अपने ही अंदाज़ मे लिया “मेरी आलोचना इसलिए की गई  क्योंकि मैंने गज़लों की धुन बनाने मे कई साज़ो का प्रयोग किया। लोग कहते हैं यह भी कोई गज़ल है इसके जवाब में, मैं उनसे पूछता हूँ आप बताएँ गज़ल कैसी होती है?

अगर आप कहते हैं कि बेग़म अख्तर की शैली गज़ल गायकी की अकेली शैली है तो मैं उसे नही मानता। उनकी शैली उनके महौल को बताती है, लेकिन इसका मतलब यह तो नही हुआ कि ये कोई फॉर्मुला है जिसे दूसरे भी अपनाएँ। उससे पहले बरकत अली की अपने शैली थी। यह मेरी अपनी शैली है, अब देखना यह है कि किस शैली को लोग स्वीकार करते हैं जिसे स्वीकृति मिलती है वही आगे चलकर परम्परा बन जाती है। अलग-अलग शैलियाँ साथ-साथ चलती रह सकती हैं।“

“दुर्घटना के बाद एक तरह से वह संलग्नता पहले से मजबूत हुई, लेकिन एक तरह से उन्होंने खुद को मुझसे दूर भी कर लिया। पहले की तरह एक-दूसरे से वह रिश्ता नही रह गया। 

पहले कुछ हफ्तो के बाद जगजीत ने अपना तानपुरा उठा लिया। वे घंटों उसे बज़ाते, मानो संगीत की तान उनके दर्द की परतो के पार जा कर उनके दिल को फिर से जगा रही हो”

स्मृतियाँ, दर्द और आँसू सब अपनी जगह थे लेकिन उन्होंने उन सबको अपने अन्दर थाम लिया उस ताकत के बल पर जो संगीत ने उनको दी थी।“

यह किताब एक बेहद खूबसूरत ज़रिया है उस शख्स की ज़िंदगी के बारे में जानने का जिसकी आवाज़ ने आपकी कई रातों को शायद ज़िंदगी दी हो।

Book Review: Mahashweta by Sudha Murthy

Two years back I picked the book of Sudha Murthy and title was “How I taught my Grandmother to read” It was kind of anthology. Non- fictional stories author had taken from his own life. There were emotions, simplicity, self-made characters and most important thing hidden messages. I loved the book and fell in love with writings of Sudha Murthy. After months I got chance to read her fictional work “House of Cards” and loved it to the core. The way author weaved the strong story line around characters was outstanding.

Past day I read her most book, titled “Mahashweta” I was curious when I started the book as I knew author not only writes fiction but somewhere she strengthens the personality of readers via her characters. And that what’s the real teachers do. They teach you life’s most important lessons which enveloped into stories, giving us examples how one reacts in particular situaltion. And I’m announcing happily Surdha Murthy Ji is incomparable into that.

If we talk about the basic story line, actually it is a thought provoking novella, in which the protagonist was a girl, named Anupama. Her family was not financially strong but her beauty and her prominent character directed her to world of art, she started doing theatre where she met her hero, Dr. Anand. They got married but somehow Fate played a cruel role and the person her husband who convinced anupama that he would love her the most…come what may, left her in the middle of world. Then story revolved around her struggle how she enabled herself to cope up all this obstacles. At last when her husband comes to her but…. Hey You …Read the novel. Don’t let me spoil the whole story. Highly Recommended!

किताब का शीर्षक पढकर मैं थोड़े संशय में थी कि रविन्द्रनाथ टैगोर जी की कहानियों में रिश्तों  की बारीकियाँ, मनोभावों का सटीक चित्रण, प्रेमरस में डूबी प्रकृति की अभिव्यक्ति मिलती है। टैगोर जी ने शिक्षाप्रद कहानियाँ भी लिखी हैं..? प्रश्न उत्सुकता भरा था।

किताब खोली गई.. सत्रह बेहतरीन कहानियों का संग्रह है यह किताब, जिसमें चुन-चुन कर टैगोर जी की बेहद खूबसूरत कहानियों को माला में मोतियों की तरह पिरोया गया है। भाषा की सरलता और शब्दों का सही चुनाव पाठकों को अंतिम पृष्ठ तक बांधे रखता है। रविन्द्र जी का लेखन साहित्य जगत के कई आयाम छू चुका है। लेकिन इन कहानियों के अनुवाद  से कभी कभी  कहानी की आत्मा, उसका मुख्य सार लुप्त हो जाता है लेकिन मुझे यह कहते हुए बहुत खुशी हो रही है कि यह किताब उन सभी मापदंडों पर खरी उतरती है।

सभी कहानियों के पात्र एक लेखक के द्वारा लिखे गए है फिर भी कितने अलग हैं। यह किताब मानवीय भावनाओं का इन्द्रधनुष लगती है।

जहां पोस्टमास्टर में एक बेनाम रिश्ते में आई विरह वेदना है तो वहीं  मुन्ने की वापसी में प्रायश्चित का एक अनोखा रूप दिखता है। मालादान में मज़ाक की हद और रिश्ते पर पड़ते उसके प्रभाव तो दृष्टिदान में पति का अहम और पत्नी  के निस्वार्थ प्रेम को बुना गया है, जिसका अंत मर्मांतक था।

देशभक्त, दुराशा, श्रद्धांजलि, सुभाषिणी, धन का मोह, हेमू आदि कहानियाँ दीपक की रोशनी के नीचे पलते अंधेरे की तरह है जो हमेशा वजूद में होता है लेकिन सबको महसूस नही होता।

अपनी कहानियों के पात्रों का इतना बारिकी से अध्ययन उनको कहानियों में पिरोना और रूपक अंलकार...मेटाफोर्स का इतना अच्छा प्रयोग टैगोर जी के अलावा शायद ही कोई कर पाता है। अवश्य पढ़िए.. अपनी बुकशेल्फ में जगह दीजिए।  

  

An Uneducated Mind : A Short Story

The Sky was black. Smoke of crackers wiped all the plans executed into government buildings.  I was wandering like a hippie—far… far away from my hometown, alone. Suddenly, few street kids caught my attention, playing at the side of that road. I stared for a while, then don’t know why? I rushed towards them and offered few bucks. They hesitated but a shied girl almost snatched the money from my hands.  I was about to turn, leaving the place, but my ears got stuck on their giggles, girl declared while looking at the sky —I’ll buy some plants.

I feel blessed sometimes that I’ve been breathing in the era of Gulzar Saab, literally it is hard to imagine the Indian music and poetry world without him. The way he expressed every emotion, the charm he weaved while directing movies, the magic he sprinkled while writing lyrics, speechless is the only word I’m left with.

I have already read “Conversation with Waheeda rahman by Naseen Munni Kabir” and I was in awe how she indulged with the artist while conversing them.. Sometimes It felt like we were in front of the respective person and trying to know their lives.

“In the Company of Poet” covers the most of the life events of Gulzar Saab in his own words. NMK doesn’t exaggerate things. She portrayed the person as he/she are. And that’s the beauty of NMK’s books!

This Book reveals the highs and lows of the life of Gulzar Saab, in an expressive manner. As The India-Pak Partition time, when his family had left the Dina(Pakistan) and come to Delhi. How he suffered in initial days... How he fell in love with books, how he started working with Bimal Da, How he got his first song as lyricist and so on… The success story, the relation between many characters related to Classical Indian Cinema.

Believe me! It was fascinating to read about such people whom you have adored that much.  The little things she pointed out in her book making the book Remarkable. The way Gulzar Saab answered each and every question amicably …I couldn’t help it but fell in love with his basic nature. The humbleness!

The poetry love of Meena kumari, The Kind nature of Bimal Da, The discipline of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, his tennis friends and of course he talked about his poetry…!

The parts I loved most:

What's his father thought - He was sure that things just happened in one’s life and there was no grand plan or element of choice.

His career and Work - Despite his long and prolific career, a career that continues to win him countless awards and widespread recognition, he wears his success lightly. He has his finger on the pulse and feet firmly on the ground. He is a man who remains intensely curious about the world around him and so has a great capacity for reinvention. Gulzar Saab’s work shows the embracing of change, and a constant search for new idioms and ideas. That is probably the reason why, for over five decades, his poetry, songs and films have appealed to people across generations.

His love for poetry - A sunset in a poem has always been more real to me than a sunset in a film. Personally, I like direct communication and thus writing poetry is still my preferred choice.

NMK: I was interested to discover the Persian word ‘shair’ comes from ‘shou-our’ which means wisdom.

G: ‘Shou-our’ in Urdu is also used for consciousness.

I don’t think you can pinpoint the moment when you turn into a writer. Writing is a process and you do not know where it starts or ends. You write something, put it aside, come back to it, go away from it, and finally the writing gains some maturity.

While taking about his father - The human tragedy unfolding around him was a far greater shock—a greater blow to him than the loss of material possessions.

He shared Tagore’s poem with his translation -

As the moon would fathom the sea…

My hindustani translation:

Samajh paati nahin ho tum mujhe,

Ki jaise chaand ek-tak dekhta hai ta’ajjub se samandar ko

While conversing about Ghalib’s Work -

I also wrote a poem inspired by a line of Mus’hafi—‘Tere kooche is baahaane humein din se raat karna, kabhi is se baat karna, kabhi us se baat karna.’ 

He shared moments of Kishore Da –

Ashaji always said it was difficult singing a duet with him because he would make her laugh in the middle of the recording. at that time songs were recorded with a full orchestra and as soon as the interlude music would start, Kishoreda would walk over to the musicians and tease the violinist or drummer while they were trying to play. But he would come back to the mike precisely when he knew he had to catch the beat. He was fantastic.

I wish I could share more dimensions of his life here. Book is such a beauty. Must Savour!

वरदान - प्रेमचन्द ( हिन्दी साहित्य)

गाँवो से आती माटी की सौंधी-सौधी खूशबू,  ग्रामीण अंचल के मध्य खिलते किरदार, उन किरदारों के मन की व्यथा तो कभी रिश्तों में जन्मी प्रगाड़ता... अगर इन सब मनभावों को करीब से महसूस करना है तो प्रेमचन्द जी का साहित्य पढ़िए। कभी कभी लगता है अगर प्रेमचन्द जी जिनका वास्तविक नाम “धनपत राय श्रीवास्तव” है अगर कलम ना उठाते तो इस मशीनी युग के शोर में वो नीम के पेड़ के नीचे उपजा एक युग खो जाता। एक अरसे बाद भी प्रेमचन्द जी  के लेखन को उतना ही पंसद किया जा रहा है।

अब तक इनके क्लेक्शन से गोदान गबन निर्मला, मानसरोवर खंड, प्रतिज्ञा, कर्मभूमि, मनोरमा, कायाकल्प...पढ चुकी हूँ...और प्रेमचन्द जी की हर किताब दिल से पंसद भी की गई। गत दिनों वरदान पढ़ने का मौका मिला..जिसके किरदार इनती खूबसूरती से गढ़े गये हैं कि आप किताब के अंतिम पृष्ठ पर कब पहुंच जाते है पता ही नही चलता। साहित्य की एक शति जिनके नाम है उनके पात्रों द्वारा एक तरह से आप अपनी संस्कृति का अध्ययन करते हैं।

वरदान ऐसे  दो पात्रों की कहानी है जिनका बचपन साथ बितता है...साथ खेलना, रूठना मनाना, अपने मन में एक दूसरे की छवि एक रिश्ते की तरह बिठाना। ये स्वप्न मंदिर तब टूटता है जब विरजन की शादी अपने बचपन के साथी प्रताप से ना होकर एक कुलपति कमला, से हो जाती है। 

Loved this part 

विरजन का किरदार मुझे मुख्य लगा ..जैसा कि प्रेमचन्द जी की कई कहानियों में देखने को मिलता है। वो बेहद आसानी से स्त्री की मनोदशा को, मनोभावों को व्यक्त कर देते हैं। यहां भी विरजन पूरे कहानी के दौरान अपने कर्तव्य और मन में छुपे प्रेम के प्रति सांमजस्य बैठाती रही। अंत में विरजन विधवा हो जाती है और प्रताप जगत में प्रसिद्धि पाकर एक योगी बन जाता है जैसा कि उसकी माँ सुवामा उसके जन्म उपरांत वरदान मांगती है पर अंत में वही वरदान किताब का मुख्य सार है।  

यहाँ ये कहना आवश्यक है अगर अंत को थोड़ा स्प्रिचुअल मोड़ ना दिया होता तो किताब और ज्यादा रोचक हो जाती। मुझे ये किताब देवदास और गाईड का मिक्सचर लगी। अवश्य पढ़िए।

Book Review : Vaishnavi by Rabindranath Tagore

रबिन्द्रनाथ टैगोर जी की कहानियों की अपनी एक दुनिया है एक अलग मुकाम। टैगोर जी की कहानियों को किसी कालखंड में नहीं समेटा जा सकता... जिस तरह वो हर एक अहसास को अपने कहानियों के किरदारों में दिखाते है..हर एक भाव को व्यक्त करते है, अतुल्नीय है। लेकिन कभी कभी जब आप भाषा की अनभिज्ञता के कारण किसी किताब का अनुवाद पढ़ते तो लेखक की कलम का वास्तविक तत्व कहीं खो जाता है। इस किताब की कुछ कहानियों ने भी वही प्रहार झेला होगा शायद। हांलाकि थीम काफी अच्छा था। लेकिन अनुवादक टैगोर जी के पात्रों के साथ पूरी तरह से न्याय नहीं कर पाए। कहनियों में हिन्दी के कठिन शब्दों को जबरदस्ती डाला गया हैं जिससे पाठक अपनी लय खो देता है। किताब पढ़ते वक्त एक तरह की बोरियत महसूस होती है। ऐसा किताब की सभी कहानियों के साथ नहीं है बारह कहाँनियों में से “वैष्णवी, डालिया, कंकाल, छुट्टी, सुभा, महामाया, मध्यवर्तिनी, मान-भज़ंन” में जहां आप साहित्य के नए आयामों से मानव हृदय की संवेदनाओं से परिचित होते हैं वहीं...”विचारक, बला, दीदी” जैसी अन्य कहानियाँ मुझे सिर्फ शब्दकोश से उठाए गए कठिन शब्दों का संग्रह लगी। इनका अंग्रज़ी अनुवाद शायद ज्यादा अच्छे से लिखा गया हो। अगर लाइब्रेरी में यह किताब मिले तो एक बार पढी जा सकती है।
