Notes on Ottessa MoshFegh's My Year of Rest and Relaxation

Buy on Amazon

Murakami's Birthday Girl

“No matter what they wish for, no matter how far they go, people can never be anything but themselves. That’s all.”

Raza Mir's Murder at the Mushaira : Rediscovered the art of storytelling

‘What! Who? How?’ Mirza realized he was babbling, but the news had hit his ears like a ringing slap. A Murder at the Mushaira? That was a first. Who had been killed? This was his community, his people.

Murder at the Mushaira,’ is an enthralling and unpredicted period drama. Raza Mir recasts Mirza Ghalib, poet laureate of the realm as detective, he is simply appointed as the chief investigator in horrific murder case of Janaab Sukhan Khairabadi.

Basically, the story of this historical fiction, set against the backdrop of the revolt of 1857. After celebrating a grand Mushaira at Delhi Haveli, a poet found stabbed to death, he was a nobleman. The cleaner found his body around the time of the Fajr prayer. It was not that distressing until the participation of high British officials, mutated it into preferential case.

Once our protagonist, Mirza Ghalib called for help, he initiated the investigation, and the world of all attendees of Mushaira, turned upside down. First it seemingly impossible to resolve the mystery, as there was many mistakes, and long list of suspects. By the time you think you have caught up to puzzle, it’s already fades away. The narrative of conspiracy entwines with myriads of secret and lies skyrockets this conundrum into compelling, entertaining and believable tale.

‘Murder at the Mushaira’ is a pleasure rush with an ambitious record of world we once knew. With enigmatic language, Mir managed to capture the shades of vibrant life of Delhi in 18th century.  It is so rich with metaphors and words that shape the story in plausible ways. Mir’s fresh perspective offers an instant connect to reader. In spite of web of sub-plots and motifs, the story entrances you in the same way that theatre does. The writing is genius and scrupulous, especially witty dialogues and hidden insights, able to suck you in and creates an absorbing environment around.

At times, this book behaves as delicacy for admirers of Urdu poetry without dulling its thrill element. Raza Mir begins each chapter with Ghalib versus along with apt translations; after all, words were his weapon. It resonates so deeply within readers’ psyche that you feel breathing among those character. With amazing cadence Raza Mir succeeds in illuminating an experience profoundly.

Bas ke dushwaar hai har kaam ka assaan hona

Aadmi ko bhi mayassar nahin insaan hona

It’s impossible for all tasks to be facile, that’s all

People find it so tough to answer humanity’s call

Mir’s eloquent prose style tugs at the heart. Apart from the unusual plot, what stands out this novel, is amount of distinctive detailing. Raza Mir captured the meditating photographic reproduction of an era. I think, mere review is not enough to bottle the kindling ambers.  Here, I have been drawing your attention to this piece, ‘Ramchandra was surprised to see how young Ratna Bai was. Hardly 30 years old, she was beautiful, but in a classical way, with none of the flamboyance that one would associate with a tavern owner. She was very fair skinned, giving further credence to rumors of British parentage of medium height with a dancer’s build, she was dressed simply in white Chudidaar Kurta with a brilliant multi color Chunni that must have been 8 feet long and 4 feet wide.’

In ‘Murder at the Mushaira, characters come to life, are kind and suspicious as well, the landscape is author’s mind while he pines to rediscover the pleasure of storytelling, Mir brilliantly shows  how strongly interlaced anxieties and love can be, ‘Their nervous expressions dissolved into relief at the site of Mirza. He had always been a favourite of the domestics as he treated them with kindness unlike other members of the Ashraaf. Now he spoke to them with brusque kindness.’

One can judge ‘Raza Mir’s Murder at the Mushaira’ by its cover, a real pristine beauty. Yet, I genuinely suggest you to pick this phenomenal read, it would be an intoxicating experience. I loved this book to eternity and beyond. Recommended!

Qaid-e-Hayaat –o-Band-e Gum asl main donon ek hain

Maut se pahle aadmi gham se najaat paaye kyon.

Ananda Devi’s When the Night Agrees to Speak to Me | Translated by Kazim Ali

‘That my tomorrow be a yesterday

Since nothing is left to accomplish

Nothing to build or to destroy

Nothing has already become; Never.’

Ananda Devi’s When the Night Agrees to Speak to Me, translated from the French by Kazim Ali, is published by Harper Perennial.

It is cold outside. There is darkness shimmering on my room’s window. I just finished last pages of this poetry book. I have been trying to recollect the moments for this piece and come up with a single word ‘fierce’.

Here, I am borrowing the words from Emily Dickinson, ‘If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can warm me, I know that is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry. These are the only ways I know it. Is there any other way?’

‘Women of sand, the wind erase us/ We will dance no more upon thorns.’ While reading her, I could feel what poetry can do to our sensibilities. The book explores the very idea of silences, woman carries around all her life. ‘Of a woman erased/ By her bruises’

Basically, this book consists of three sections, poetry, prose, and an insightful interview between Ananda Devi and Kazim Ali. Each page carries the facet of prism that depicts emotional element of womanhood, intimate and messier experiences of her body, witnessing the violence and condition of tender minds on some island,

She transforms the rage and power into common landscape where one could sense the myriad revelations of woman’s life with lines like these ‘I only speak of it/ To believe I have lived a little../ And we live in the invisible/ Free but crippled, crippled but free.’

Poetry of Ananda Devi, gets us to ponder over consciousness and rituals of a women body that normally, we don’t even consider to be think of. She weaves these verses in a poem ‘Blood amniotic fluid slickness from your core/ All that’s made you women/ But is that all.'

The title poem of ‘When the Night Agrees to Speak to Me’ is serene yet terrific as sharp as double-edged sword, ‘When the night agrees to speak to me/ It is with a blade/ That slices/ Into the places of certainty/ That carves/ Love into loneliness.’

Besides that a series of prose talks about the power of words, Just these few lines of first prose, which is masterfully put the strength of Devi’s writing “Words erect the wall of lies and icy danger of shame without poetry you would have under your fingers only the skeleton of silence a mummified skin that could have neither flesh nor sensuality every glance an empty orbit lips furled around uselessness.’

Also, Devi examines the situation of tender hands. A place exists amidst us all where they had to hold guns in place of toys and notebooks.  Grief is smallness of dreams, and human survival in an inhuman world. Just look at the imagery, Devi created here ‘The killing blow you do not see coming but from your exploded mouth hangs the mud of your dreams and with this in your hands you will know nothing of the others but their fear you will bend by your rage but no other body will have ever offered you love. ‘

I felt her each free-verse sonorous and stone-cold, Vulnerability travels through one page to other, As if someone touches the wounded reality of life with soft feather.

Add to that, this book contains the original poems as well; if you speak French then it is treat for your senses.

In sensible translation of Kazim Ali, this book defies boundaries of language and form; it also shows how our souls interlaced with pain and love, dreams and self-identity, curiosity to know oneself and that internal fight being alienated.

I think one must read marvelous body of work of Ananda Devi. There is fierceness in her writing that makes you numb and then alive. That’s the only way she knows to exist on pages and in readers’ hearts. READ!

Siddharth Shanghvi’s Loss: Three hauntingly beautiful essays on grief

‘It’s the phone call you dread – yet fully expect.

‘Papa passed away,’ my sister said through muffled sobs. ‘He died’ she repeated, as if I might not have understood her the first time around.’

‘Loss by Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi’ opens with the most brutal sentence no one wants to hear. I have gone through this experience. I lost my mother in an accident (2009). I received the call, and was left with numb heart, and her innocent promise that, I will never leave your side.

At first, this little book behaved as a ‘Kataar’, slashing through me, inch by inch and pain echoed in flashes. It became a warm sky eventually, where could I actually breathe.

In his book, Siddharth Shanghvi meditated over myriad of moments, vulnerable and intimate. Writing is crisp and elegant. The way author used metaphors is beyond any praises, “Considering death is like plunging your hand into pond: encountering shapes you cannot name…”

I have been amazed how author recollected the pieces of his broken soul and woven them into words with such precision. It takes certain amount of courage to write about your pain and longing.

“When we lose an intimate, two deaths occur. The first is the formal, physical death of the person. The other death is of the person we were around them.”

Basically, ‘Loss by Siddharth Shanghvi’ is consist of three essays, documentation of three deaths, along with few photographs.

“To write was to help someone else erase some part of their pain. This was the first motive for all my writing. It remains so.”

In first section, Siddharth Shanghvi reminisces about his father, Mr. Dhanvant, a fiery independent being, and to watching him to struggle with cancer and later, loneliness.

Author remembered the small ordinary moments with him, as how his father keeps aside all the good reviews of his books, he never forget to give company to his son to the dentist’s chair, and dropping him at school was his morning routine.

“In the end, the only thing we can do for anyone, beyond loving them, is simply to acknowledge them as they are, for who they are, even if it is to let them go from our lives.”

Here, author decoded many facets of life as, ritual of going temple, The Antyeshti sanskar, and urgent need of mourning space.

In second section, Siddharth Shanghvi talks about his dog, Bruschetta. ‘Maybe dogs know this trick, a sleight of paw as it were, they can hack into our loneliness, pry it open like a lock, decode its inner machinery, lay it bare, make us believe we were never teetering into the wrong side of alone.’ he writes.

The day Bruchetta comes into his life and the day he leaves, unforgettable imageries, lingers to your mind.

Siddharth analyzed the eternity of pain and marked some findings, “when will it all be done? But I cannot put myself down, I cannot euthanize the experience that deadens me.”

The essence of this essay is, “Grief is not a record of what has been lost but of who has been loved.”

Besides words, Author included some exquisite photographs to this collection. In a photo, Ariel shot shows his father at the head of a long lonely dining table. Another frame portrays the melancholy of empty house. There was one shot of stairs which leads to nowhere, and a memory of his four-legged angel peeking through the grill.

“Loss” embraced my soul from the beginning but the third section of the book about his mother, Padmini, just left an indelible impact on me.

It begins with pondering over a question of life, “Could someone else die for you, or could this idea be expanded to mean that you die when someone does?”

I am in awe of his words, and powerful imagery, author picked to describe his mother “In the blinking darkness of the ambulance I accounted all that was still intact, unchanged, prime among them my mother, unbreakable, indivisible, a sage of losses, a graduate from the university of untold suffering.”

Here, author tells about her mother’s disease, difficult hospital trips, moving bed, long nights full of suffering,  Despite of having such mess around, she has strong  personality, “Who laughed her heart out, and briefly it seemed her many miseries grew silent and her laughter was louder than her sorrow- louder than all life. “

She sings a lullaby for her son, writes handwritten letters to her husband and weaves a poetry book for her own soul, Here, I am sharing a piece of her poem ‘Bhatkan’.

And his mother’s advice “She told me to enjoy my fame but to never quite believe it. Write more. Read Read Read.

Word by word, this book dissects your very being and finds a hidden voice, longing for shore. Although, it is a short book, which hardly takes two days to finish, but this breathing tale will remain with you till eternity. Keep your loved ones close and this book even closer. Highly Recommended!
